Russia: Politics Overview

Government Structure

Located in Moscow, the Russian government has been established since 1993 and practices its own Constitution of the Russian Federation. Regarding the constitution of Russia, the Federal Assembly became its legislature which consists of a Federal Council and Duma. There is also a distinction between the central government and the local and regional governments. Under the legislation mentioned previously, it has given these local and regional governments more power such as being able to impose regional taxes (despite less tax revenue).

International Relations

Russia has multiple relations with multiple countries in the Americas and Europe that range from a variety of issues over embassies participation to nuclear weapons. In particular, the Russia-United States relations refers to the tumultuous diplomatic and trade affairs that have occured between the two superpowers over the years which has ended in a mutual sanction.

Political Environment

The current president of Russia is Vladimir Putin, an Independent Party’s man who controls the workings of Russian politics such as nomination of important political figures, foreign and domestic policies, and other presidential duties. With the position as prime minister between his first and third terms, Putin has a good understanding of how Russian politics function and has been active in maintaining a fair political environment.

Recent Developments

The Putin Administration is facing hate from Russians in every which way. Rallies are popping up everywhere which is the result of economic downfall and political corruption. At this point, the oil and gas industry are the only things keeping Russia on the international map.
